Sometimes, you don’t like it

Sure.

Like now.

Bloodbath in small-caps.

Alleged suicide.

NPAs.

Witch-hunt.

Did you choose Equity as an area of expertise?

Ok, then deal with it.

First up, India’s History is laden with scams.

We are where we are despite these.

Secondly, there’s growth. In other parts of the world, there is not much growth.

India is an emotionally volatile nation.

So are its markets.

Since this is where we act, let’s get used to things.

If you’ve been following the small entry quantum strategy, well, then you’ve got ammunition…

…at a time, when the value of this ammunition is immense…

…because lots of stuff has started to go for a song.

You do feel the pinch though…

… because whatever’s already in, is bleeding.

You don’t like it.

It’s normal.

Going in at a time like this, you will feel pathetic.

However, for your money, you are getting quality at cheap multiples. This will translate into immense long term wealth. Quality at cheap multiples multiplies fast.

Here are a few reasons you should feel ok about going in.

The small entry quantum strategy has rendered you liquid…

…after sorting out your basic family life, income-planning and what have you.

You are going in with money you don’t require for a longish time.

Muster up the courage.

Get over your pinch.

Engage.

Buy quality.

Debt-free-ness.

Shareholder-friendliness.

Generated free cashflow.

Transparency.

Diligent managements.

Product-profile that’s going to be around.

Less dependency on water.

Versatility.

Adaptibility.

Make your own list.

Use the stuff above.

Wishing you lucrative investing with no tears and with lots of smiles.

Control

Who’s in control?

You?

Market?

Does the market control you?

Do you control yourself?

How do you answer this?

Why are these questions relevant?

Control is pivotal.

It sets the tone for market life, and its overhang affects normal life too.

That’s why it is essential to have such control in one’s hands, and not hand it over to Mrs. Market.

So, how does one answer this question?

What triggers you to open your terminal?

The market?

Or you yourself, at a time and place of your own choosing?

If your answer is the former, the market controls how you act.

However, if you decide when and where to let market forces into your life, and for how much time, well, then you’ve not handed over such control.

Bravo!

How did you position yourself to achieve this?

Primary income not from the markets?

Not.

Don’t listen to tips?

Don’t.

Have a set time for work?

True.

Have a set place for work?

Roger.

Have a set system that’s implemented?

Affirmative.

Watch market TV?

Nope.

Read financial news online, or in print?

Only while researching a company.

Do your own solid research?

Do.

‘K, you’ve not handed over control all right.

Sure. Hand over control and the next thing you know it’s your life you’re handing over.

Getting the Number

There comes a time in life…

…when you are in a position to make defining statements about yourself.

This is what you don’t like doing.

Shove it out. Except what you can’t.

This is what you like doing.

Amongst what you like doing, this is what is beneficial for you.

Make a list for this last category.

A.

B.

C.

D.

E…

…etc.

Get the number…

…in these categories.

What does that mean?

It means, scale these activities up.

There will be resistance.

Don’t bother.

It’s your lot in life.

This is what you’ve come to do.

First up, you’re going to do it.

Many times, you’ll find yourself slipping into the other category, of things that you like doing, but which are not necessarily beneficial for you.

Fine.

Please yourself.

That’s also what you’ve come to do.

When you’ve had your heart’s content of pleasure, please come back to the originally earmarked category.

Intermittently, you’ll be doing stuff that you don’t like doing, but aren’t able to shove out.

This stuff is also good for you,…

…because, it teaches.

Just do it with that attitude.

Once you’ve gotten your numbers in your earmarked category, you can shift gears a bit.

Voila, you start doing stuff that benefits others.

Your stomach is full.

You’ve achieved.

It doesn’t give you a kick anymore.

Now, benefitting others will give you a kick.

Go for it.

Get your number here.

Of course.

It’s something you came to do too.

Make sure you get here.

Don’t get stuck somewhere before you reach it.

Hidden Benefit of a non-conducive Work Environment

Sometimes, we land up in a space that enhances the quality of our work.

What kind of a space do we think that is?

Conducive?

Or non-conducive?

Sure, a conducive environment should lead to high quality work.

Hold that thought.

When the human being stops struggling, he or she has been known to get lazy.

In that frame of body and mind, quality walks out the door.

The highest quality work seems to be happening in environments that make the person concerned struggle.

When one struggles, all pistons fire.

At any cost, one needs to stay afloat, and kick.

And kick one does.

One kicks one’s demons out.

Once they’re gone, achieved momentum boosts performance, and quality shines.

Cut to thought on hold.

What’s our take now?

Are we ok if the people around us are nags, and make it very difficult for us to work…

…or if there’s some other unbearable thing about our place of work?

Yes we are.

Because…

…we love quality.

Robotic Stock Selection Anyone?

No…

…thank you…

…is it?

Sure, stockscreens.

We use them all the time.

A stock screen is a robot.

So why am I still saying no thank you?

I use stockscreens day in and day out.

I use them for trade selection, and I use them for long-term stock selection.

However,…

…(here comes the hammer),…

…the final say is mine.

I’d like the human touch to answer yes or no.

Also, out of say a hundred selections, I can still say no to all.

And, if something catches my eye, I can dig deeper.

I’d like to keep all these things in my hand.

I’d like my market approach to be with open eyes and usage of common-sense.

So where are we exactly?

Somewhere between one-fourth and half robotic.

That suits us.

We save hours of sweat labour.

After sweat labour has done its work, we start applying our minds.

We take over where the robot has left off.

When it Rains Learning

Yeah, when does it…

…rain learning?

You probably might not like what you hear.

Are you used to solitude? Working on your own? Own decision-making?

Or…

…do you look for approval?

…all the time?

We spoonfeed our loved ones when they ask us for help. I’m guilty of this too.

However, in my solitude I did realize, that spoonfeeding is the sworn enemy of learning.

What is learning?

Inculcation to the extent of translation into DNA – that’s learning.

It’s an intrinsic process. Yes, everything about learning happens inside.

When does it rain learning?

When you’re dependent upon yourself for your decisions, that’s when.

One wrong step could break you, so you’re cautious.

Your system is working at full-stretch.

It’s an intense time.

That’s the melting-pot required for DNA translation.

A wrong decision causing loss is rich in learning.

It can also cause depression. However, you know better. You get up, learn, and move on.

A right decision causing profit boosts confidence.

It can also cause euphoria, which offers an entry door towards destruction.

However, you know better.

Saturation

I don’t wish to add to my repertoire.

It has reached some kind of saturation.

There’s no limit to how far I can go within my repertoire.

However, it is not comfortable with strategy addition.

Fine.

Did you just have this dialogue?

With yourself?

It’s good you did.

While you start out in a field, you’re developing it.

There needs to come a stage, in a while, where you have exactly identified, that you’re developing this, this and this further. Nothing else.

Once you know what the exact game is, all your focus is required to take it to the nth level. What that n is going to be is up to you, again.

Bottomline is, after a point, know your game.

This is the game.

This is what you are scaling up.

That, that, that and that you are discarding, or have discarded.

You need to reach this point within a reasonable time-frame.

Then comes the next step.

Pray, what might that be?

Automation.

Before embarking upon scaling up, that what remains in your saturated repertoire – automate it.

Staff.

Technology.

What have you.

Use any means for automation.

Anything that’s legit, and which works.

Use it.

Standing instruction.

Alarm.

Alert.

Whatever.

Automation is a huge blessing if used properly and after having tied up all the loose ends.

If implemented in a hurry with sieve-like loopholes, it can even take you to the cleaner’s.

Implement automation in a justified and sure-shot fashion.

Do you know what’s going to happen now?

You have created a situation, where scaling up means just punching in an additional 0 in the right corner, before the decimal point.

Wow.

After a while, the complete field will be on auto.

Why?

If you’re wise, you won’t scale up beyond your sweet-spot.

Why?

Because obnoxious scales come with obnoxious problems.

What’s obnoxious?

Anything beyond your sweet-spot…

…is obnoxious.

What is your sweet-spot?

That only you can discover.

So what now is the exact status of the field?

Your repertoire in the field has reached complete saturation regarding strategy and scale. It is on full auto. It is adding to your well-being without you batting an eye-lid.

Congratulations.

However, where does that leave you?

Is that even a question?

There’s so much to do in the world.

Discover a new field.

Develop your new repertoire in this field.

Take it to strategy saturation. Automate it. Scale it up. Take it to the sweet-spot. Wean off the scaling up. Move on.

What a life it’s going to be for you!

When it’s not wrong to be wealthy

Wrong statement? Or question? Or whatever the topic is supposed to be?

No.

Right question.

When is your being wealthy not wrong for the scheme of things?

When you put your wealth to good use…

…when you take the world a few steps forward,…

… then.

When is your being wealthy useless for the scheme of things?

When you sit on your behind…

… and do nothing constructive with your wealth,…

… that’s when.

That’s also when your wealth is gonna be a one-off.

Just you watch.

Nature’s not put you where you are…

… FOR NOTHING…

…!

Make it count.

Now.

Heard of regret?

A meaningless life fills one with regret at the time of death.

Or so they say.

That would be a pathetic state of mind to carry forward, wouldn’t it?

So different from a feeling of content about having lead a meaningful life and having brought happiness to many, huh?

Think about it.

Wealth should not lead to mental degradation.

On the contrary, it should catalyze and nurture comprehensive growth all around your nucleic personality.

Yeah, give off your wealth, as does a tree laden with fruit.

Wealth-Generators often go Contrarian

You knew that too, right?

Sure.

Going contrarian is a buzz-phrase.

We hear it again and again…

… till we begin to start thinking…

… that we know what it means.

Well, try going contrarian.

Yeah, try actually doing it.

You’ll see what I mean.

It’s real hard.

Going against the crowd takes all the strength you might have…

… and then some.

Most humans aren’t able to go contrarian.

Most humans aren’t wealthy.

When there’s blood on the streets, there’s no telling how much more there will be.

Under such conditions, the contrarian investor lets go of his or her hard-earned money into an investment, knowing perfectly well that the Street might even value the investment tomorrow at a huge discount to today’s price.

That’s ok too, says he or she.

Why?

Because homework’s been done.

Underlying is strong.

Debt-free.

Management is stellar.

Balance-sheet is robust.

Projections are paramount.

That the world is pricing the investment wrongly is a problem with its vision.

Underlying is not going under. With above credentials, this alone matters.

Times change. Vision of the majority changes. Investor makes a killing. Cashes out some, principal and what have you. Leaves lots of free-standing shares… forever… or till parameters change.

Wealth-generators repeat this behaviour-pattern many times in their lives.

They’re not afraid of going against the grain.

They know otherwise.

Also, the money they use has been freed up.

Its being out of action for a long time is not going to change their lives even a bit.

They will have the last laugh.

Wealth is the reward of going contrarian.

Going for the Multiple

Relax.

We’re not going for the jugular.

Or are we?

The jugular has the most copious flow.

Maybe we are then…

… going for the jugular.

However, there’s no stabbing happening.

We do everything from the inside of our comfort-zone.

We act with harmony.

Balance.

Focus.

Intelligence.

Common-sense.

We try and be non-violent about it.

What are we doing?

We’re looking to create wealth.

What makes us look?

Security. Our basic income secures us.

Boredom. Adding to our basic income has become boring.

Overflow. As basic income starts to overflow, it needs a long-term avenue in which it doesn’t demand our constant attention.

Fine.

What’s the best way…

… to go about it?

Where there’s honey, there are bees.

Finance-people find you. You have money. They have investments. For finance-people, you are bread and butter.

So, you sit.

You wait.

You let them come.

You’ve got discriminatory-ability.

You sift. 99% of what comes goes into the bin.

You like 1%.

You invest in that 1%.

How much?

Whatever you pre-define as your per-annum outflow into wealth-creation.

Only that much.

What then?

What’s the bottom-line?

What’s your holding strategy?

Nothing.

You sit.

The biggest money is made…

…while sitting.”

You’re not even looking at your long-term investment more than once a month.

You’re not interested in daily quotes.

The daily quote can say zero. You don’t care. You know that you are in the process of creating wealth, and that it’s going to take long, and within that period you don’t care if the world thinks your holding is zero, because you know it isn’t.

Why?

Due-diligence.

Ability to think differently.

Ability to see wealth in its nascent stage, and to recognize it.

You have these things.

They didn’t come for free.

You took some solid hits to earn them.

Yeah, you have what it takes, and that’s why…

… you’re going for the multiple.

What to do with a racing mind?

Harness it.

Or, it’ll get you.

How?

It won’t stop racing till it finds something of interest.

Then, it’ll hook on…

… without caring too much…

… whether that something’s good or bad.

At that stage, you might not be able to control your mind.

Control it when it’s controllable.

Before it’s latched on.

Before the flow has started.

Define for yourself the area of flow.

Actively make your mind connect.

Regulate your flow.

Enjoy the harnessed potential of your mind.

Let’s observe a practical example in motion.

I’ve actively latched on my mind, among other things, to the stock market.

The market has many aspects.

I need to take into account most of these, if not all, while picking a stock.

Sure.

However, some aspects stand out for me.

To these aspects I latch on my mind very thoroughly.

I like it to get a feel for honesty.

While I’m screening a stock, my racing mind either picks honesty or it doesn’t.

If it hasn’t smelt and felt honesty after two days of studying the stock, I just let the stock go.

Some are big on numbers. Some are big on charts. Sure, I look at both. Honesty delivers the final decision for me, though, as in, the crucial blow.

Instead of resorting to all kinds of nonsense, the racing mind can be taught to become one’s greatest asset.

Nath on Equity : have stuff – will talk

Behind Equity, there’s 41). human capital.

It’s human capital that keeps 42). adjusting equity for inflation.

43). No other asset-class quotes on an inflation-adjusted basis.

That’s good news for you, because 44). equity takes care of the number one wealth-eater (inflation) for you.

All world equity ever quoted, whether currently existing or not, has 45). returned 6% per annum compounded, adjusted for inflation.

46). All equity ever quoted that still exists has yielded 11% per annum compounded, adjusted for inflation.

Equity selected with good due diligence, common-sense and adherence to basic rules listed here and in previous articles is 47). well-capable of yielding 15%+ per annum compounded, adjusted for inflation.

However, equity is 48). a battle of nerves, at times.

This asset-class is 49). more about creating long-term wealth.

It can be used, though, to 50). generate income through trading.

51). Trading, however, is burdened with more taxation, commission-generation and sheer tension.

Trading equity 52). eats up your day.

Investing in equity 53). gives you enough room to pursue many other activities during your day.

Trading strategies are 54). diametrically opposite to investing strategies.

55). It takes market-players the longest time to digest and fully comprehend 54).

For long-term players, 56). up-side is unlimited. This is a vital fact.

Also, 57). downside is limited to input. Factor in good DD, and that very probably won’t even go half-way.

58). Thus, 56). and 57). make for a very lucrative reward : risk ratio.

Equity needs courage, to 59). enter when there’s blood on the streets.

It also needs detachment, to 60). either exit when required for monetary reasons, or when everyone else is getting ultra-greedy and bidding the underlying up no-end.

Monotony

Plan in motion?

Let it play.

Sure, monotonous.

Monotony bores you, right?

Boring monotony yielding acceptable results is a good outcome. Don’t spoil its party.

Divert your attention.

Try a stunt.

Risk a little.

Maybe one out of your ten stunts works out.

Develop this one further.

Still working.

Scale it up slowly.

Working.

Auto-pilot.

Monotony.

Results still good.

Stop looking.

Let it play.

Look elsewhere.

Do something new with yourself.

Soon, it’ll be time to go.

Meanwhile, build a legacy to leave behind, in your memory, one that benefits many.

The Thing with Focus

Depth.

Confidence.

Proper entry.

Decent exit, if required.

Understanding.

Lack of panic.

Overall picture.

These are some of the things that focus is capable of giving.

Swagger?

One-basket attitude.

Over-depth.

Narrow-mindedness.

Loss of overall picture due to over-chewing one subject.

Robotic mindset leading to freeze.

Yeah, these too. Within the capabilities of focus.

We want the former qualities.

We’re discarding the latter ones. If they come knocking at our doorstep, we’re shooing them away.

We spoke about diversified focus.

Whatever we do in life, let’s do it well.

We’ll have our many baskets. Why should we take the risk of having just one basket?

And, into our many baskets, we’ll delve deep-deep-deep.

Period.

Fitting

I have this Wills fleece sweat-shirt since ’98.

Love it.

It’s a fit.

Can wear it for anything.

I’m sure you own or do something that just fits.

Very few people in the market understand the value of a fit.

What does a fit feel like?

It comes naturally.

No prompting or pushing.

It’s the essence of your strategy which resonates with you.

A fit holds you and moves you forward.

It makes you money till it continues to fit.

The ideal fit lasts a lifetime.

Nuances.

Everything and everyone has nuances.

A fit happens when nuances are out of the way. They’ve been dealt with in a full and final manner. They appeared, sure enough, got knocked out, which is when they disappeared. What remained was pure you and your fit. The two of you united.

Why is this fit so important?

We’ve spoken about the money angle. A fit makes you money.

There’s the family angle. A fit doesn’t let your market-life harm your family-life. Hence it ensures its own longevity by vitalizing your market-life and also your mental health.

A fit then possesses the versatility to deal with stumbling blocks along the path. Travel? You implement your strategy successfully despite travel. Schedule? Fit works around it. Diet? Fit changes diet, till diet fits.

Don’t underestimate the power of a fit.

🙂

Decoupling One o Two

Trade on.

Market forces.

You.

Connection.

Attenuation.

Life normal.

This is the real decoupling.

What was the other decoupling?

The myth one?

Myth?

I mean, Switzerland is kinda financially decoupled. The CHF just keeps its own despite anything.

Israel is also sort of decoupled. Despite everything. Functions on its own tangent. Matter of opinion.

These are exceptions. They prove the norm.

There are remote chances these exceptions won’t exist tomorrow. Having said that, let’s hope nothing like that ever happens.

However, permanent decoupling is mostly a myth. We’ll be better off not incorporating it into our investment or trading strategy.

Decoupling one o two is a different matter.

It is very welcome.

It gives longevity and harmony to a trader’s market- and normal-life.

Happy trading!

🙂

Pioneering One o One

Sure, who am I to write about this?

Valid question.

However, I don’t really care.

I’ve got something to say.

And I’m saying it.

If you’re still wondering about the validity, well, I’m treading two paths where the textbooks say only so much. After the textbooks have signed off, I’m pretty much left groping in the dark. Whether or not I come up with something big, that time will tell. Meanwhile, here are some comments from along the path.

It’s lonely.

I walk alone.

I listen to no one.

That’s the price of it all.

That’s ok.

I don’t mind walking alone.

Challenge of the path keeps me awake, alert and alive.

There are chances I’ll die out in oblivion, without having found anything significant.

That’s also the big risk of pioneering.

Without taking this risk, I won’t be able to tread the path.

Yeah, it’s fine.

This is the extra mile.

It will cause one to stretch extra.

Some feel life’s boring without such a challenge.

At times one gets disheartened.

Strategies don’t pan out.

Systems fail.

Map isn’t being charted.

One is getting nowhere.

This happens many times.

At such times one wishes one were doing something else.

Yeah, only human.

Wanting to be super-human?

Why not?

Is it a crime?

At times one can forget one’s responsibilities.

Then it’s a crime.

Coming back to zero is required then.

Hubris.

Highly avoid.

Sure, you’ll eventually become great, a pioneer and all. Hubris will bring you down.

Remember Sir Isaac Newton investing twenty thousand pounds in a company at its peak, just before the company went bust…? He went around having a law passed that no one was allowed to utter the name of this company in his presence.

Grounded.

Stay grounded.

Works best.

That’ll keep you focused.

Go, Pioneer.

Additive Connectivity

What’s your market footprint like?

Meaning, where do you tread?

How do you tread?

Are you making a hash of it?

Do you connect the dots?

Are you organized?

Does your one action span across multiple goals?

What exactly are we talking about?

Chaos.

You are your own light.

Nobody can help you, except you, ultimately.

Therefore, gear yourself up, to win the game for yourself.

It possibly won’t come to exist, that you do one market thing.

Market activity is multi-faceted.

Even if you’re trading one single entity, there are many actions that go along with this one single activity.

Yes, we’re talking about market actions.

The sum total of your market actions is your market footprint.

Make your actions additive.

Meaning?

Each action should add to you.

If an action is not adding to you, don’t do it.

Even an action that stops further loss adds to you, for example.

Also, make your actions connect across segments.

Meaning?

Let’s say I’m eyeing a stock for a possible purchase, or a repurchase. Stock gaps down next morning, before my action. Aha. Hold. 60-70% of all gap-downs play out further. There’s a solid reason for gap-downs. So… hold. Yeah, action on hold. Why? I will possibly get a better price for reentry later, there’s a 60-70% chance of that. Thus, an action now won’t add to me. Action postponed. What do I do with the money set aside for the repurchase? Liquid mutual fund purchase. Online. Seamless. Connecting across? Absolutely. I’m simultaneously accumulating liquid funds to later go in for a private-placement NCD. Therefore, my one action from the equity segment has connected across to the debt segment. Yeah, connectivity. Additive. Stopped me from possible high entry. Made upcoming NCD purchase more possible by adding to its intended corpus. Additive Connectivity.

Yeah, make yours a winning footprint.

Before signing off, I’d like to share with you that i’ve just decided to take additive connectivity to the nth level for myself.

Sure, I’ll be sharing more examples.

Sharing brings joy to everyone, even to the person who is sharing.

Discipline or Brilliance, what would you have?

Both?

Ha!

Getting cocky already?

That’s brilliance for you.

Over-confident, lazy, show-offy, indulgent, holier-than-thou…, the list goes on.

These are some of the things brilliance also leads to, apart from displays of itself.

Would you still have it?

Many would.

The average being likes being spared the spade-work.

And you know what? I don’t even desire it in this form, with all these poisonous side-effects.

However, it’s acceptable to me in a different form, without the poison.

How does that work?

Ever slogged?

Hard work and discipline, people?

Heard of these?

These two have the side effect of – sparks of brilliance, without the poison.

How?

Bell curve of human effort – imagine.

You’re working at it’s edge.

Miniscule parts of you stray over to its beyond.

Rest of you eventually asks – hey, where are those miniscule missing parts?

Back they come.

They’re bring back vibrations from beyond the bell-curve.

These vibrations diffuse into you.

Some of them get absorbed. The rest dissipate.

Those getting absorbed find thought patterns they can cling to. That is how they are absorbed.

This energy from outside of our three perceivable dimensions, now fused with nascent but constructive thought patterns – what does it do?

It brings these thought patterns to fruition and to their logical conclusion.

Such actions are perceived as sparks of brilliance by humanity.

Such actions change humanity for the better.

That’s the kind of brilliance to strive for – through hard work and discipline.

What about the Spark?

Yeah, what about it?

Versatile word.

Used in spy mission abort code phrases.

Romance.

Automotive engineering.

Electrical engineering.

Stocks.

Stocks?

Stocks.

Whacko?

No.

Explain.

Ok.

Stockscreener.

Yeah?

Spits out list.

Yeah.

Eyeballing.

Ya.

Spark? Look into stock.

No spark anywhere, in the whole list? Redefine screener. Screen again.

This is a typical chronology of the beginning of stock selection.

Of course, now follows deep due diligence.

However, what are you DDing in?

That’s decided by the spark.

Remember the word.
